BMW F25 OEM Xenon Headlight Retrofit Guide

This guide details the process of converting a Pre-LCI BMW F25 X3 from factory Halogen headlights to OEM Bi-Xenon headlights (non-adaptive). Please note that this guide does not cover the installation or coding of auto-leveling suspension sensors, nor does it include washer jet installation (both of which are legal requirements for Xenon headlights in the UK). Additionally, physical headlight mounting and general E-Sys operation are outside the scope of this document.

For reference, photos of the OEM Halogen wiring harness are included at the end of this guide (Figure 3 and Figure 4).

1. Pin Mapping / Adapter Harness Wiring

The table below outlines the verified adapter harness pin mapping between the OEM Xenon headlight connector and the factory Halogen vehicle connector. You can either repin the existing Halogen connector block (Figure 3, Figure 4) or build a plug-and-play adapter harness using male and female 12-pin BMW headlight connectors (Figure 1). Constructing an adapter avoids modifying the factory wiring harness.

Note: In a factory Xenon setup, dedicated wiring lines and pins supply power for the DRLs and Bi-Xenon shutters directly from the Footwell Module (FRM). This retrofit repurposes two existing wires on the Halogen harness to perform these functions.

Figure 2 illustrates the complete pin-to-pin mapping between the two 12-pin connector blocks.

2. VO Coding Procedure (E-Sys)

To add factory Xenon support and low-beam stabilization to the vehicle order:

  1. Connect to the vehicle via E-Sys.
  2. Read FA and edit the vehicle order.
  3. Add Option Code 522 (Xenon Light) to the SALAPA Element list.
  4. Save the FA, calculate FAFP, and write the updated FA to the vehicle.
  5. Code the FRM module using the updated FA.

Note: Adding Option Code 522 configures the FRM module to factory Xenon specifications, enabling low beams. The main beam shutter and DRLs will not function until Section 3 is completed.

3. CAFD Manual FDL Overrides (Restoring Analog Halogen Pins for DRL and Shutter Main Beam)

Because VO Option Code 522 configures the FRM module to expect LIN-bus communications for Xenon headlight modules, you must manually override specific FDL parameters in the FRM CAFD file to restore analog signaling on the original Halogen harness pins for the shutter and DRLs.

A. Output Driver & Harness Configuration

FILE: 3080 FRM_LAMPMAP, 30

  • LAMP_MAP_PARA_SATZ_01 → Set to BV_F025_wert_01__Halogen (forces analog power driver instead of LIN communication)
  • LAMP_MAP_PARA_SATZ_02 → Set to BV_F025_wert_01__Halogen (restores analog pin mapping for output drivers)

Note: At this stage, enabling Daytime Running Lights via iDrive will illuminate the halo rings continuously, but switching to parking lights via the headlight switch will cause flickering. Proceed with the following steps to resolve this issue.

B. DRL / Side Light Channel Configuration

To prevent LED flickering across both Daytime Running Light and Parking Light dial positions, apply the following parameters:

  • FILE: 3400 FRM_TMS_AHL_LWR, 10 | Parameter: STEUERUNG_LICHTRING → lin [01] to diskret [00]
  • FILE: 3060 FRM_U_EFFECKTIV, 20 | Parameter: U_EFF_FL → wert_01__aus [00] to wert_02__13,0V [82]

C. Disable auto leveling

  • FILE: 3400 FRM_TMS_AHL_LWR, 10 | Parameter: LWR_AHL_TYPE → autom_lwr to man_lwr
  • FILE: 3060 FRM_WARKMKALK_UEBERW, 20 | Parameter: STEUERUNG_LWR → aktiv to diskret

D. Re-enable rear brake lights

  • Section: 3080 FRM_LAMPMAP

LAMP_MAPA_PARA_SATZ_07 \rightarrow Change to: BV_F025_wert_01_Bremslicht_ueber_SL2

  • LAMP_MAPA_PARA_SATZ_08 \rightarrow Change to: BV_F025_wert_01_Bremslicht_ueber_SL2

Lower Supply Voltage for Halogen Running Light (7.0V Dimming):

Section: 3060 FRM_U_EFFEKTIV

U_EFF_2_SL \rightarrow Change to: wert_03_7,0V

4. Reversion Procedure

To revert the vehicle back to its factory Halogen configuration, follow these steps:

A. Revert VO Coding (E-Sys)

  1. Connect to the vehicle via E-Sys.
  2. Read FA and edit the vehicle order.
  3. Remove Option Code 522 (Xenon Light) from the SALAPA Element list.
  4. Save the FA, calculate FAFP, and write the updated FA to the vehicle.
  5. Code the FRM module using the updated FA to restore stock factory settings.

B. Revert Wiring

  • If a custom harness adapter was used, simply disconnect and remove the adapter harness.
  • If the original factory harness was depinned, reverse all pin locations according to Figure 2.
